Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

Lewis Hamilton shocked the sporting world by announcing his decision to join Scuderia Ferrari in 2025. The seven-time world champion will end his long and successful stint with Mercedes to race in red next season. Now, Hamilton’s former teammate and 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button has commented on the 39-year-old’s move.

Button claimed that despite the announcement becoming old news, the entire paddock will talk about Hamilton’s Ferrari switch forever. The former world champion highlighted that the 39-year-old had won multiple world titles in the pinnacle of motorsport. Moreover, Jenson Button labeled Lewis Hamilton as one of the best drivers in the world.

Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari! I know it’s old news now but that is something we’ll talk about forever. This guy that, was given the opportunities, won so many world championships. He’s one of the best drivers I’ve ever seen drive a racing car, I’ve seen it first hand. Jenson Button said on Sky Sports F1 podcast

The former Brawn GP driver was astonished to see the seven-time world champion have the confidence to make such a move. Lewis Hamilton will be driving alongside Charles Leclerc with the Monegasque driver having built the team around him in the past few years. Jenson Button applauded Hamilton for taking such a call at this point in his career.

To have that confidence in himself to move to Ferrari and go up against someone like Charles [Leclerc]… I would say, BRAVO, Lewis! Jenson Button asserted

Jenson Button claims Lewis Hamilton lacked this level of confidence a decade ago

Jenson Button partnered Lewis Hamilton at McLaren for three seasons between 2010 and 2012. The two drivers had a fierce on track rivalry during this period. Button reckoned that the seven-time world champion lacked this level of confidence during his days at Woking. However, it seems that after a successful stint with Mercedes, Hamilton had become much more confident.

When we were teammates he didn’t have that confidence but now he does. Jenson Button stated

The former world champion claimed that Lewis Hamilton had become a more rounded individual in the past decade. As such, the 39-year-old was ready to take up another challenge. Button reckoned that this was exactly what fans would like to see next season.

He’s a really rounded driver and confident that he can have another challenge. And that’s what we need! Jenson Button concluded

Certainly, millions of fans will be waiting to see Lewis Hamilton race in red next season. The 39-year-old is determined to win an unprecedented eighth world title in the sport. As such, Hamilton would be hoping to get a car capable of fighting for the championship at Maranello.
